Water field, 2014

Waterborne land art proposal.

Glenn Davidson (artist) and Sergio Pineda (architect)

The tidal lagoon at Swansea Bay will be constantly sculpted by the wind and motion of the waves – a complex array of wave patterns rising and falling with the tides.

Responding to this living elemental surface, a mast floats in the water, buoyant, gently bobbing and rocking, eight metres tall above people's heads. Like a disused bottle the vertical mast visually yaws against the horizontal boundary of the lagoon.

The proposal WATER FIELD is formed from a matrix of masts spaced at one metre intervals. Each mast moves individually as the force of the lagoon moves through the array. The result is a sequence of movements with fractional differences of angle. This phasing in the upright sway creates a haze of interference, a ‘mist’ in the open space of the lagoon.

The collaborative interplay of masts autonomously building then dissipating will be an optical performance of endless change for the tidal lagoon.
